Immigrant community looks forward to change

November, especially the election, also brought hope of a more just environment for immigrants in the coming year. President elect Joe Biden pledged during his campaign to prevent the deportation of TPS holders and create a path to residency for them (See our legal services page for immigration news: click here.

His commitment to a national strategy against COVID 19 also will help immigrants, many of whom are essential workers and are especially vulnerable to a pandemic that has had the greatest impact in minority communities.

A demonstration of the need for CEUS and other immigration activists to work vigorously took place on Dec. 3, however The Hudson County Commissioners voted to extend a ten-year contract with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agreeing to house immigrants at the Hudson County Jail, overriding opposition from immigrant groups.
